History: The Kanawha County Public Library system dates to 1908, when the Kanawha Women’s Literary Club appointed a committee to organize a public library for Charleston. Nearly three decades later, in 1934, the Charleston Public Library became the Kanawha County Public Library and began bookmobile service to the rest of the county. The library moved to its present location in 1967. In 1963, the county library system expanded its reach by acquiring its first branch library in St. Albans. Other branch libraries followed – Glasgow and Cross Lanes in 1976, Dunbar and Elk Valley in 1977, Sissonville in 1979, Marmet in 1980 and Clendenin in 1988. The Kanawha County Library system is the largest in the state and now serves over 181,000 residents.
